Where the first two were more geared to building a community and relationships. Tagging products concentrates more on the business side of tagging on Instagram. This can go both ways. For example, you can tag a brand or product that you support or that is quite similar to yours in order to target a select audience and you can also tag a brand or product that you are working with or being sponsored by. 

Location Tagging

Location tagging can be especially useful when you are trying to target an audience in a local area. This will help you build up a local fanbase and once you have a grip on your local market you can spread out into different locations.

@ Mentions

@ Mentions is just a different way of tagging accounts, people, brands and products. Instead of tagging them in your post directly on a picture, you can @ them in the caption below or in the comment section.

When to Tag People and When Not to Tag People on Instagram

Now that we have gone through all the different types of tags on Instagram and the benefits of using them it is important to know when and when not to use them.

When to Tag

  • Thanking a brand, business or affiliate.
  • Thanking certain followers and people you know.
  • Reposting content.
  • When the brand, product or person is actually in the post.
  • Promoting a brand, product, sponsor and account.
  • When answering a question.
  • When you are at a certain location.
  • Shout outs.

When Not to Tag

If you are about to tag somebody and it has nothing to do with the points mentioned above, think very carefully before you do. Because tagging the wrong people can have a very negative impact on your brand. It might not be your intention but in today’s times you must be very careful especially on the internet.

  • Will the person feel embarrassed/attacked if you tag them in the post?
  • Are they interested in this type of content?
  • Do they want to be associated with this content?
  • Have I tagged this person before too many times already?

If you are not one hundred percent sure when answering these questions, then the post you are trying to tag the person in is not the right one for them. 

Don’t tag profiles that are private, they are private for a reason and Instagram makes sure that they cannot be tagged in posts. Remember not to come across as attention seeking. No one wants to be bombarded with tags and notifications from you. They will start to get the feeling that you are spamming them, and nobody likes that.
