You must already have heard of the term’s influencer marketing and influencers. But with influencer marketing growing stronger and stronger every year it is important to have a general idea about the people behind it. 

Influencers play a key part in influencer marketing. Without them it wouldn’t exist. Influencers are a group of people who have amassed a following on social media and are seen as role models and experts in their industry by their followers.

And with the meteoric rise of influencer marketing so comes the influx of new influencers. In the beginning it was a niche market with only a few influencers to choose from. Mainly celebrities, movie stars and athletes. But nowadays there is a plethora to choose from. Thanks to the rise of social media and different industries.

There are three simple ways to divide influencers. The easiest way is to divide influencers based on the number of followers, what content they create and what industry they work in.

Influencers by The Number of Followers

Mega Influencers

Mega influencers are your celebrities, athletes and internet personalities who have more than 1 million followers. Also known as the crème de la crème of social media. This is the highest-ranking category in social media influencer marketing.

Businesses and brands work with mega influencers in order to reach a huge audience and increase brand awareness globally. Because they have an enormous following across all their social media accounts and their content reaches people quickly all over the globe.

They are known for massive reach allowing brands to get their products and services in front of large audiences at once. Typically campaigns with mega influencers are the most expensive but if the goal is to get products in front of a large group of people and increase brand awareness there is no better way.

Collaborating with a mega influencer can also be beneficial because of their professionalism and experience. Also putting a well-known person next to a brand's product will help its prestige and credibility.  

The downside to mega influencers is that they lack the intimate relationship with their audience. Because even though they have a big following it is very hard for people to be able to relate with them compared to the other influencers on the list. 

So, it may be great for brand awareness, sales and instant impact but it might not be the best for building a relationship between a brand and new consumer.

Macro Influencers

Second in line are macro influencers. With a follower count anywhere from 100 000 to 1 million followers. These influencers have grown their audience via the internet and are normally well-known social media stars who have gained their fame by going viral online. Most commonly youtubers, bloggers and journalists. 

The biggest advantage that macro influencers have going for them is that they have built their community from scratch. So, they know their audience very well and what works on them. That is why brands love working with them. Because they still have a big enough audience and engagement rate, but the big difference is that they concentrate on a specific niche.

Allowing brands to target a specific niche but still letting them target a big enough audience. Giving them the best of both worlds. 

This is thanks to the special relationship between macro influencers and their followers. They know their audience very well. Because building such a big following over time helps them learn the ins and outs of their followers. Understanding what their audience will like a will not is the key ingredient to macro influencers success.

They have a very strong connection with their fan base and need to keep it strong. That is why choosing the right brand deal and partnership is crucial for them. Otherwise they will lose their followers' trust.

Micro Influencers

With a follower count of 10 000 to 100 000 followers. Micro influencers are the most common influencer on social media. Even though they might have a smaller reach compared to mega and macro influencers, their followers are as loyal as they come.

Most commonly known as experts in their field. They are very passionate about their niche. Making them trustworthy amongst their followers. Credibility is key when it comes to influencing people and macro influencers have it in abundance. Especially amongst their followers. They know that they would never promote or support something that they don’t 100% believe in themselves. 

Like the famous phrase "quality is better than quantity." With such an engaged audience it doesn’t matter that they have less followers then the ones mentioned before them. They are more likely to produce more quality leads thanks to their very specific and loyal fan base. 

Micro influencers are also more regularly available. If brands can find micro influencers that are in the same market and niche it can be a very prosperous partnership. It all comes down to finding the right match with the right audience for the brand's product.

Nano Influencers

Last but not least the nano influencer. Not known to many because they have just started to gain traction. Accumulating anywhere from 1 000 to 10 000 followers. This is the new type of influencer that not many people are paying much attention to, yet. 

More and more brands are seeing the potential that nano influencers have. These types of influencers normally have an influence on their local community and people around them. Making them the most relatable out of all the influencers. Because they know most of their followers and vice versa. 

Imagine a friend, family member or a fellow student who has a real talent for Instagram and is well known in their community. Posting quality content and in result receives good engagement. That is your typical nano influencer.

Their reach might be the weakness but just like macro influencers their relatability, engagement and credibility are one of the strongest. Especially amongst their communities. This is because of their authenticity and trustworthiness. Ask yourself who are you more likely to trust? A celebrity or someone you know or can relate to. 

Yes, their reach and experience will be less than the other influencers. But with the right strategy and idea nano influencers can be the ideal partner for small and upcoming brands.

YouTubers

YouTube is the world’s number one video sharing platform where people share their creativity. You can find nearly any type of content on YouTube. Are very different to your usual celebrities. After becoming famous thanks to a TV show or competition. Reality stars are a hot commodity but just for a certain time period. That is because some don’t want the fame and some aren’t able to create the right content to keep their audience engaged. The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!

What’s a Rich Text element?

The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.

Static and dynamic content editing

A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
